Legislation to Affect Pain Prescription

Beginning September 1, 2019: For the Treatment of Acute (Not Chronic) Pain, Health Practitioners in Texas may not issue a prescription for an opioid in an amount that exceeds a 10-day supply nor provide for a refill of an opioid for acute pain. This does not include treatments for substance abuse, chronic pain, or cancer care. It also does not include any end-of-life care, like palliative care or hospice. Texas House Bill 2174 by Rep. John Zerwas, MD (R-Richmond). If you have any questions about how this may affect your care, please speak with your healthcare provider.
